Winds of Crete

By David MacNeil Doren

Efstathiadis editions - 230 pages

Winds of Crete by David Mc Neil Doren

Here is a fresh, wholly personal, frank yet affectionate account of six years living on Crete, traveling all over the island, meeting all kinds of people and everywhere encountering the Homeric island hospitality. The author is American, his wife, Inga, Swedish and they went to Crete because they were exhausted by the 'pent-up, claustrophobic years in northern climes'. They lived with Cretan families until they found a house of their own. Inga suffered from a severe heart condition and they underwent poverty and illness and other hardships, yet emerged from it all with their faith and optimism unimpaired. The book has an intriguing theme -their developing relationship with Crete counter pointing that with each other. But they were not looking for paradise, nor did they find it; instead they found something much more valuable, a way of living happily even when disaster strikes. They determined to enjoy life while they could, and in the way they had chosen which gave them a rare approach towards the Cretans-their guile, and their often exasperating and sometimes crazy behavior, and to the more violent aspects of Cretan life. When their house, with others in the village, was destroyed by a tornado the rebuilding pitch forked them into communal activity as its liveliest and most typically Cretan.
